Bacon Memorial Past Weekly Sermon Titles 2007

SERMON December 30

This Sunday's Sermon:

“ Finding Hope For the New Year”

Based on:  Matthew 2:13 – 23
(New King James Version)

The Flight into Egypt

13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.”
14 When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, 15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”

Massacre of the Innocents

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying:

18 “ A voice was heard in Ramah,
Lamentation, weeping, and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children,
Refusing to be comforted,
Because they are no more.”

The Home in Nazareth

19 Now when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the young Child's life are dead.” 21 Then he arose, took the young Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.
22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned by God in a dream, he turned aside into the region of Galilee. 23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, “He shall be called a Nazarene.”

Christmas Message “ Christmas Is Love ” Dr. Peck

SERMON December 23

This Sunday's Sermon:

“ His Name is Jesus”

Based on:  Matthew 1:18 – 25

Christ Born of Mary

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”
22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”
24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS.

SERMON December 16th.

This Sunday's Sermon:

“ Patience is a Virtue”

Based on:  Matthew 11:2 – 11

2When John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent his disciples
3to ask him, "Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?"
4Jesus replied, "Go back and report to John what you hear and see:
5The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[a]are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.
6Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me."
7As John's disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind?
8If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings' palaces.
9Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
10This is the one about whom it is written: " 'I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'[b]
11I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

SERMON December 9th.

This Sunday's Sermon:

“ Finding Peace”

Based on:  Matthew 3:1 – 12

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea
2 and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."
3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: "A voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.' "[a]
4 John's clothes were made of camel's hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.
5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan.
6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.
9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
11 "I baptize you with[b] water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

SERMON December 2cd.

This Sunday's Sermon:

“XX”

Based on: Matthew 24: 36 – 44

The Day and Hour Unknown

36 "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,[a] but only the Father.
37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.
38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark;
39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.
40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
42 "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.
43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into.
44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

SERMON November 25th.

This Sunday's Sermon:

“ “God's Love: Cradle To Cross””

Based on: Luke 23: 33 – 43

33 When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left.
34 Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One."
36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar
37 and said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself."
38 There was a written notice above him, which read:|sc THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence?
41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."
42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[b]" 43 Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."

SERMON November 18th.

This Sunday's Sermon:

“Modeling the Christian Life”

Based on: Luke 21: 5 – 19

In our Gospel this Sunday, Jesus challenges Jerusalem, and teaches His followers a lesson. The challenge was this; in the near future of His day, the temple would be destroyed. This occurred in 70 AD, when Titus, the Roman General with his troops besieged the city and, destroyed the temple. The lesson for all followers of Christ is, the Holy Spirit will assist us in our testimony for Christ. Jesus had already taught this to the disciples in Luke 12:12. Whenever an occasion rises and, you can speak about your faith, and what God is doing for you, don't worry yourself about it. When times come, the Holy Spirit will empower you with words to speak.

SERMON November 11th.

This Sunday's Sermon:

  “The Journey”

Based on: Haggai 1:15b – 2:9

In 520 BC the Israelites returned to Jerusalem from exile. Their eyes fell upon the destruction throughout the city, including homes and the temple. Broken hearted, they became devastated. However, the prophet Haggai encouraged them, and soon despair and apathy gave way to an enthusiastic start on rebuilding their lives, homes, city and place of worship. We at Bacon are on a journey forward, with God engineering what shall be. With hands, hearts and prayers we shall glorify God and experience the peace of Christ that surpasses all understanding. Jesus will continue to encourage us, as Haggai did for Israel.

SERMON November 4th.

This Sunday's Sermon:

"Faithful To Our Call"

Based on Luke 19:1-10

The story of Zacchaeus reminds us all
that Jesus calls us to follow him.
As St. Paul said in
2 Timothy 1:9,
you are called with a holy calling.
Our actions, words and relationships
with each other in life
need to reflect Jesus.
